BEFORE
According to designer Aileen Salva Brown of Paragon Kitchens, the kitchen of this 5,000-sq.-ft. Puslinch, Ontario, Canada home was one of those rare delicious projects in which little was required in terms of redesigning the floor plan. The layout of the kitchen was already the open concept the homeowners desired; however, as the house was built in 1997, the finishes, appliances and overall function of the space simply weren’t up to today’s standards. Like any pre-existing kitchen, there were obstacles to be dealt with in order to deliver the clients’ dream kitchen. A basement staircase located in the corner necessitated careful planning with regard to island size and format, and a tall, sloped ceiling made hood design and placement a challenge.
AFTER
The idea of relocating the basement staircase was proposed and quickly dismissed, as a prior basement renovation made this too difficult. In order to work with – rather than against – this layout, an L-shaped island with an incorporated bar-height table provided a solution. In order to maintain a light and airy feel, the basement railing was substituted for glass. (Another intriguing challenge – the Dekton “Odin” tabletop was discontinued a year prior to the project start date, so the slab had to be kept in storage until fabrication time: a real “measure twice, cut once” situation, since a new one couldn’t be procured in case of mistakes!)
The issue of the deeply sloped ceiling and its impact on the range hood was solved with a “box” hood design into which the Gaggenau chimney hood could be incorporated. A light wood finish was selected to match the island cabinetry.
Because both clients are tall individuals, the counter height was raised to 37″. Perimeter cabinetry by Miralis in a sleek dark hue is contrasted with the blonde island cabinetry for a chic modern look. A full suite of Gaggenau appliances, including three cooktops (one induction, one gas and one teppanyaki), steam and convection ovens, a warming drawer, 30″ refrigeration column and 18″ freezer column, provide the home cooks with the vast functionality they craved. Additionally, two workstation sinks from The Galley make both prep and cleanup simple.
